Sandboxels is an in-browser falling-sand simulation game developed by R74n, with mechanics such as heat simulation, electricity, density, chemical reactions, fire, and over 500 unique elements to play with.

Sandboxels is a single-player game, but users can export save files that can be downloaded and imported by others.

The simulator can be used to experiment with chemistry, to cook food, or simply to pass time. Users are able to passively discover and learn through observation of the effects of their actions.[1]

Gameplay

Sandboxels takes place on a blank canvas. Elements are placed onto the canvas, where their behaviors are expressed as time goes on.

Sandboxels can be played on the main website in any modern web browser, or downloaded as a web app on desktop or on mobile.

Elements

Elements are the various materials, liquids, gases, life, and more in Sandboxels. When placed onto the canvas, they appear as pixels with differing properties. Each element is found within a category.

Elements have behaviors that determine how they move on the canvas. For example, Powders tend to fall downward and move to the side when they hit something.

Each individual pixel has its own properties, such as its temperature. Depending on the element, pixels can be melted, frozen, shocked, ignited, broken, and more. There are various tools that can affect a pixel's properties, such as Heat or Paint.

Pixels can react with certain other elements, which creates many unique scenarios. For example, Dirt can be combined with Water to create Mud, which can then be combined with Sawdust to create Mulch.

There are currently 546 elements, including 228 hidden ones.

History

The development of Sandboxels first started on December 12, 2021. Shortly after, on December 15, 2021, the game was first publicly released on the R74n website.

Sandboxels was called "Sandbox Game" until Version 0.5 on December 21, 2021, and was hosted at R74n.com/sandboxgame. After it was renamed, it was shortly moved to R74n.com/sandboxels until December 23, when it was moved to the current URL, sandboxels.R74n.com.[2] An official Discord server for Sandboxels and other R74n projects was opened on February 4, 2022.[3] This allowed players to start posting their save files in a dedicated channel following Version 1.9.

Trivia

  • Sandboxels was originally called "Sandbox Game". It was later renamed to Sandboxels, a combination of the words "Sandbox" and "Pixels".
  • Before release, only Water, Wall, and a white version of Sand were added.
